The Barbie Movie!
My mom, daughter and I went to see the Barbie movie! Have you seen it yet?
As many of you may have seen, the monologue brilliantly delivered by America Ferrara’s character Gloria has gone viral, and for good reason- it resonates. It certainly resonated with me during this time of transition while I navigate through this tough job market.
Let's take a moment to talk about some of the parallels between the job market and the powerful monologue:
👠 "It is literally impossible to be a woman. You are so beautiful, and so smart, and it kills me that you don't think you're good enough. Like, we have to always be extraordinary, but somehow we're always doing it wrong."
In today's job market, it often feels like we have to be the perfect candidate, juggling countless expectations while still trying to find our footing. Just like how society imposes unrealistic standards, job seekers are often told they must have the exact right experience, the flawless resume to make it through ATS, and the impeccable interview skills. It's frustrating, isn't it?
👠"You have to be thin, but not too thin... You have to have money, but you can't ask for money... You have to be a boss, but you can't be mean."
Sound familiar? We're expected to have a mix of qualities that sometimes feel at odds with each other. Just like those contradictory expectations, job seekers are asked to be confident but not overconfident, experienced but adaptable, and assertive yet approachable. It's a tightrope we navigate daily.
👠"But always stand out and always be grateful. But never forget that the system is rigged."
We're told to find ways to shine and stand out as a candidate, but also to remain humble and grateful for every opportunity. But let's not forget the bigger picture – the job market can be biased, and the path to success isn't always straight.
👠"It's too hard! It's too contradictory and nobody gives you a medal or says thank you! And it turns out in fact that not only are you doing everything wrong, but also everything is your fault."
Let's be real – the job search can feel like an uphill battle. The conflicting expectations, the constant uncertainty, and the silence after putting your all into applications can be disheartening. But here's the thing...just like America's character in the movie, we can't let the contradictions define us.
